Erik Thorvaldsson, known as Erik Blood-Hand, founded the first settlement in Vinland, at Brattahlíð on Tunulliarfik Fjord. Erik Blood-Hand was born in Jæren, Norsca and was the son of the Jarl Þorvald Ásvaldsson. Erik Thorvaldsson became known as Erik Blood-Hand after killing several rivals to his father’s jarldom, including two of his brothers. For this and other crimes he was exiled from Norsca. He plied the trade as a viking, working for a while with the Ynglings in Scania, until several other crimes resulted from his exile from Scania as well. Assembling a crew of other vikings and criminals, Erik sailed off into the west.
